Knysna Oyster Festival

by Andrea 23. June 2015 11:30

The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is fast approaching, with oysters of course being a huge component.  In fact about 200 000 of them are consumed by the festival goers every year.

A
few arbitrary facts about Oysters:

(Other than the most widely acclaimed benefit that will not be discussed in detail in this article).

  • All oysters have a gender, which means they are either male or female. However, oysters can actually change gender.

  • In the wild oysters can live up to 30 years depending on the species.  During their lifespan they may change their gender back and forth several times.

  • The process of opening an oyster shell is known as Shucking.

  • Oyster shucking competitions are held throughout the world.

  • The largest oyster recorded was found off the coast of Denmark in the Wadden Sea.  It measures 35.5 cm (13.97 in) in length and 10.7 cm (4.21 in) in width.

 Uses of Oyster shells:

  • Glow in the dark powder – surely you should try this!
  • In medicine because of the high calcium content of the shells.
  • Crushed shells are used in animal feed
  • Handy Salt & Pepper servers
  • Decorative crushed paving in the garden
  • Excellent candle holders

6 Worldly ways with Oysters:

Russian:

horseradish
Tabasco
l
emon zest

Japanese:

1/2 teaspoon sour cream
1/2 teaspoon wasabi paste
parsley

Thai:

1 teaspoon lime juice
1-3 thin chili slices

American:

1/2 teaspoon finely chopped tomato
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped celery
1/2 teaspoon lime juice
Tabasco

French:

1 teaspoon champagne vinegar
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped shallots
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
pinch of pepper

Nordic:

1/2 teaspoon finely chopped apple
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped shallots
1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

For each variation, combine ingredients and use mixture to top the oysters!

Getting ready for the winter chill!

by Roxanne 20. April 2015 13:07

As the days get shorter and the nights grow longer, so the temperatures drop and we realise winter is upon us!

Be sure to keep your guests warm and cosy when they visit your establishment.

Here are a few tips to do just that:

Blankets

Having a warm fluffy blanket to throw over your knees or shoulders while watching the telly or sitting on the deck with a sundowner is sure way to ensure total comfort and warmth. Have a few of these blankets rolled up and placed in rooms and recreational areas. Also have extra blankets in a cupboard or at the bottom of the beds for those to get extra cold during the night.

Warm drinks

Be it coffee, tea, hot chocolate or horlicks, everyone wants to sip on something warm to keep the body temperature at a toasty level. Ensure that you provide a few different varieties of these warm delights for your guests to indulge in.

Reading material

Contrary to popular belief, the paperback reading material is still very much "the in thing". Snuggling up on a couch or in bed with a good book is a very popular for many people on holiday wanting to escape everyday stresses and strains. Try to have books, newspapers and reading books available for guests to choose from.

Heaters

While blankets and socks keep you warm, the chill in the air can be unforgiving. By supplying a small fan heater in your rooms, guests will be extra comfy with more than enough to keep them warm.

By keeping your guests warm and cosy throughout their stay they will want to be back time and time again!

Tented Camps

by Andrea 27. March 2015 09:14

Anyone for camping?

Some of my best childhood memories are of camping with my family.  The excitement and counting down the days until holidays.  The joy of pitching the tent.  The embarrassment of pitching the tent inside out in front of avid campers.   The bonfires at night.

Some of my best teenage memories are of camping with friends.  But the less said about those experiences, the better.

There is a whole new form of camping nowadays that is just as enjoyable, but far less stressful.  Pack your bags and go – no tent required.  Experience the joy of camping without the hassle at one of our fabulous tented camps.

Booksure Poll

by Andrea 25. February 2015 08:58

Do you send documents to your guests before they arrive and after they’ve left?  These could be menus, directions, contracts, invoices or anything else that you use in your business.   We are thinking about adding this functionality to Booksure, so that you would be able to upload and send documents, images or files directly from within your Booksure Dashboard.

But before we go and give you something that you’ll never use, we would like to hear what you think.

Please click on the link to complete a very quick poll.  Oh, and this functionality will not cost you anything extra!

4 ways to make your Rooms extra Romantic this Valentine's Weekend

by Roxanne 3. February 2015 10:55

As the couples start filtering in, going that extra mile to make everything beautifully romantic for your doe eyed guests is important.

Here are 4 ways to make your rooms irresistible:

Lighting

One of the most inexpensive and effective ways to transform a room is through good lighting. Warm subtle light, which can be created by a lantern, bed side lamp, or candles, creates a beautifully romantic ambiance. If a room is lit the right way, everyone looks their best and feels relaxed and comfortable.

Scent

The sense of smell plays a much bigger role on our moods and emotions than one might think. Certain scents can evoke strong emotional reactions. For a romantic and calm environment, be sure to provide pure aromatherapy candles or incence sticks, of vanilla, sandalwood or rose.

Sound

Time to break out the golden oldies "love songs". The sound of certain music can dramatically alter the state of a person’s mood. Allow your guests to create a romantic atmosphere by having a handful of music options available. (In case they didn't bring their own).

Taste

The way to anyone's heart is through their belly! This we know is true. Provide your guests with a romantic candle lit "dinner for two" option, or a romantic picnic basket which they can enjoy alone in their room.  Ensure their basket is packet with yummy goodness like cheese, crackers, chocolate coated strawberries, chocolate truffles and wine or champagne.
